THE YEAR OF THE YARD
“Last year was the “Year of Home,” as pandemic lockdowns and stay-at-home orders resulted in boom in home-related spending boom. This year will be the “Year of the Yard,” as Americans turn their attention to improve their outdoor spaces.
The pandemic has fundamentally altered our relationship with and expectations of our outdoor spaces, believes Allison Messner, co-founder and CEO of Yardzen, an online landscaping and outdoor design service.
“For a very long time, our yards were the only greenspace we could access,” she shares. “As a result, the way we live in those outdoor spaces have changed, becoming the only accessible playground for our children, as well as their classroom and also our workplace.”
Because our outdoor rooms have multi-functional uses, her company’s landscape plans also include home furnishings from Crate and Barrel, CB2, Yardbird and others to bring those areas to life.
“People want an outdoor space that reflects the same stylistic rigor that is afforded to the interior of their home,” she shares. “They want a styled outdoor space with multiple rooms and separate and distinct areas for different purposes.” — @forbes
