In honor of Joseph Eichler’s birthday this week, we’re shining a light on this wildly influential builder of modern homes. Eichler was a social visionary, constructing inclusive and diverse planned communities around his non-discrimination policy. In fact, he resigned from the National Assn of Home Builders when they refused to support it in 1958. All in he built 11,000 homes across California. Did you know he lived in a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home for a time, which he loved and shaped his vision for the open, airy, atrium homes he went on to build? His designs, with exposed post and beam construction, concrete floors and floor to ceiling windows, were designed to bring the outside in. Unorthodox at the time, but went on to define a new aesthetic and even lifestyle.
