kndlsargeant Over 23 lives have been lost and 28 people currently missing. Entire towns have been flattened, over 1500 homes destroyed and many more left damaged. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated. Civilians have been forced to protect their homes and loved ones due to lack of government support, there is simply not enough funding or resources in certain regions. Some regions of the country the air quality measures 20 times above the hazardous level. Australia's fires are estimated to have released 350 million metric tons of carbon dioxide to date. The total area that's been burned is rapidly approaching 6 million hectares (almost 15 million acres). That's almost seven times the amount of burnt area the Amazon experienced in 2019 and about three times the amount burnt in California's 2018 wildfires. There’s currently one fire burning in Victoria alone that is the size of Manhattan. Experts say half a billion animals have lost their lives. Keep in mind about 87% of Australia’s wildlife is endemic to the country, which means it can only be found on this island continent, and a great many of those species have populations living in the regions now being obliterated by the fires.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
