While not being officially approved and with the regulations against it not enforced, the practice of the Nose Art found a way of expressing the individuality of the crew to evoke memories of home, peacetime life, and as a kind of psychological protection against the stresses of war and the high probability of death.
In 1993 the United States Air Force Air Mobility Command ordered that all nose art should be gender-neutral. Go fucking figure.
