Many weapons within the SOG arsenal were modified to be suppressed, like M1 Carbines, WELRODS, Swedish Ks, Grease Guns. But a popular favorite for SOG Recon Teams was the Mark 2S Sten. Used during WW2 by US and British Commandos, the Sten was still involved in the jungles of Vietnam. One particular story is directly connected to the Sten gun and a certain Recon Team.
The team was sent in to recon a large trail near a river in Laos.
The RT laid out an ambush along side of the trail, to not only recon it, but to possibly capture an NVA soldier for questioning.
After several hours of waiting, six NVA soldiers waded through the river and walked right into the ambush site. The NVA squad stopped right on the river bank, stripped off their equipment and clothing and then jumped into the river. One NVA stayed behind to keep watch over the weapons and rucksacks. The lone NVA was no less than 10 feet away from the RT Leader at this point.
A gentle rain came down and the NVA guard slipped into his rain poncho. The Recon team waited for the squad to finish up and move on, but heard more NVA voices nearby.
Knowing that the team could be discovered, the Team Leader set the sights of his Sten gun on the lone NVA soldier. As he was about to shoot, he noticed a peculiar expression on the man's face and a rapid bouncing motion underneath his poncho...the man was masturbating.
The Team Leader held his fire out some sort of sense of decency and kept his sights trained on the NVA's head. Once the man was finished, he fired two silent shots and the guard slumped forward.
In less than 20 seconds, the recon team slipped away, leaving behind a corpse and one of SOG's greatest campfire stories.
