On the night of May 8, 1945, PFC Charles E. McCune was serving as a squad leader and machine-gunner with the Marines of 1/5 on Okinawa when they came under attack.
Seriously wounded and completely blinded by a grenade which was thrown at his machine gun position, McCune felt his way back on his MG where he waited, until he heard the Japanese directly in front of him, and began to slay bodies literally by instinct.
He continued to operate his weapon with deadly effectiveness, holding the line with little support..
Not knowing that the enemy had finally withdrawn, he waited until several of his squad members had advanced to his position and, in the meantime, killed two more Japanese soldiers attempting to drag back their dead.
When reinforcements arrived, his hole was surrounded by 26 enemy bodies.
For his actions, he was awarded the Navy Cross.
