"The STABO rig was developed to get our teams out from under fire straight up through canopy jungle. In training, we always considered it a great carnival ride. In combat, it was a great relief to get in it because you knew, even if you got hit on the way out, at least your body would get home.
In the earlier days, the McGuire rig consisted of hanging on with one arm cuffed into a loop.
There was one recon man who didnt use the loop as the team was in contact when they got in the rig. He got hit about 300 feet up and fell out, but nailed the enemy machine-gunner with his M79 on the way down.
