On February 26, 1945, PFC. Douglas T. Jacobson and the rest of this unit were waging a relentless battle to capture a summit on the island of Iwo Jima.
With casualties mounting, Jacobson decided to launch a one man assault against the entrenched enemy armed only with a bazooka, his rifle and an unprecedented amount of testicular fortitude.
Under point blank fire, he maneuvered towards the kill zone, destroying a 20mm AA gun, two MG positions and a bunker.
He then moved deeper into the lines, destroying 6 more positions, a tank and another bunker. As the rest of the unit followed the drag marks left by his scrotum, Jacobson continued his rampage, conquering the position single handedly after having personally destroyed 16 enemy positions and killing over 75 enemy soldiers.
At only 19 years old, Jacobson was awarded the Medal of Honor. Jacobson was asked by President Truman how he accomplished such an incredible feat, he said simply, “I don’t know how I did it. I just had one thing in mind… to get off that hill.”
On the 40th anniversary of the battle for Iwo Jima, he was asked if the fighting and sacrifice was worth it.
Jacobson replied: "Those were the days that men were men and proud of it. They never asked if the island was needed or if the war was just. When they were called to do their duty, they stood up and were counted.” #ww2 #marines #semperfi #zerofoxtrot #stayzero
