On May 2, 1945 during a fierce gunfight on the island of Okinawa, 18yr old Corpsman Robert E. Bush ran around the lines administering first aid to his wounded Marines, despite the heavy volume of automatic fire, artillery and mortars.

As the attack passed over a ridge top, Bush was advancing to administer blood plasma to a Marine officer lying wounded on the skyline, when the Japanese launched a savage counterattack. With no fucks to give, Bush held the plasma bag with one hand and drew his pistol with the other and began slaying japs until his ammunition was expended. He then grabbed a discarded carbine, and continued killing the enemy at point blank range.

All of the sudden, a grenade went off beside him, Bush lost an eye and suffered multiple shrapnel wounds; regardless, he continued to protect the officer. Three more grenades blew up in his vicinity, and Bush just brushed it off like no big deal.
As the attack subsided, he calmly disregarded his own critical condition to complete his mission, valiantly refusing medical treatment for himself until his officer patient had been evacuated, and collapsing only after attempting to walk to the battle aid station.

For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor and upon returning to the US, he went back to high school, graduating in 1946.
