On June 11th, 1944 Captain Michael Allmand was in charge of leading his company of Gurkhas (3/6 GR) deep into the jungles of Burma to annihilate Japanese forces near the Mogaung river.
As they approached their objective, the company came under heavy fire. Allmand single handedly charged the positions killing all defenders with his kukri and a few grenades.
A day later, he single handedly destroyed several MG positions capturing a vantage point to be used for the final push.
With the last objective in sight, the company was tasked with capturing a heavily defended bridge. Allmand, now suffering from severe trench foot and barely able to walk, moved forward alone and singlehandly charged and destroyed an MG position but was killed shortly after.
Witnessing his sacrifice and with the assault in full swing, another member of the Gurkhas charged and single handedly captured the bridge, killing over 40 Japanese with his kukri, his MG and a flamethrower.
Both men would receive the Victoria Cross.
Capt. Allmand was only 20 years old.
