"The napalm which we fired from the cannon of our tank was propelled by the high pressure from a large cylinder of carbon dioxide.
When we changed the cylinders from the full ones, the one we took out always contained a small amount of CO2. Now CO2 under pressure is freezing cold, so someone had the bright idea of using it to make ice cream.
By using condensed milk which was available from the mess section of the company, and pouring it into a metal canteen, adding sugar, and some crushed canned fruit and then spraying the outside of the canteen with leftover CO2 that was in the cylinders, and at the same time stirring the contents of the canteen, in about 2 minutes you had a dessert as near to real ice cream as you could get.
Unbelievable as it may seem, we did enjoy homemade ice cream on Okinawa occasionally." – Joseph Petti, B Co., 713th Flamethrower Tank Bn, 42nd Armored Reg, 11th Armored Div. #bbqdreaming #youscream #zerofoxtrot #stayzero
