On May 7, 1945, during the bitter fighting of Okinawa, the Marines from 2/1 were pinned down against the heavy Japanese defenses situated on Hill 60.
Pvt. Dale Hansen, armed with a bazooka, single handedly charged the enemy head on while under intense concentrated fire and destroyed a pillbox.
When his bazooka was shot out of his hands, he managed to grab hold of an enemy rifle and continued his rampage killing 4 Japanese at point blank range, and 2 more by crushing their skulls with the butt of his rifle.
He then used enemy grenades to take out a mortar position and kill 8 more of the enemy until his men were able to catch up with him.
An entire company had been tasked with what Hansen did with his own balls.
Unfortunately, 4 days after his actions, Pvt. Hansen was shot and killed by an enemy sniper. He would posthumously receive the Medal of Honor in 1946.
