On August 25, 1968 Sgt. William Seay was driving a truck as part of a normal resupply run from Long Binh to Tay Ninh with the 7th Transportation Bn (48th TG). On that day, the convoy was ambushed by an entire NVA Battalion. As the main elements of the convoy entered the kill zone, they were struck by intense rocket, machinegun and automatic weapon fire.
Sgt. Seay immediately dismounted and took a defensive position behind the wheels of a vehicle loaded with high-explosive ammunition.
With the enemy close to within 10 meters of his position, Seay killed two at point blank range and a sniper.
When an enemy grenade was thrown under an ammunition trailer, he left his protective cover, exposing himself to intense enemy fire, picked up the grenade, and threw it back to the enemy killing 4 more.
Another grenade landed approximately 3 meters from Sgt. Seay's position. Again he left his covered position and threw the armed grenade back upon the assaulting enemy.
By this time, he was shot in the right wrist; although immobilized and suffering severe blood loss, he continued to fight killing 3 more in the process until he was shot and killed by an enemy sniper.
The entire ambush lasted over 9 hour and at only 19 years old, Sgt. Seay, a simple truck driver, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor because sometimes, your MOS doesn't mean shit when it comes to the commitment of slaying bodies.
