In November 2004, British WW1 veteran Harry Patch (left) at 106 years old, met with Germany's last Great War veteran Charles Kuentz, 107 years old, at the battlefields of Passchendaele, where both men fought in the 1917 Third Battle of Ypres.
Harry Patch: "It was emotional. We've had 87 years to think what war is. To me, it's a license to go out and murder. Why should the British government call me up and take me out to a battlefield to shoot a man I never knew, whose language I couldn't speak? Thousands and thousands of lives were lost. It makes me angry. All those lives lost for a war finished over a table. Now, what is the sense in that?"

Kuentz: "...with that handshake we said more about peace than anything else ever could."
