On Jan 21, 1968. Marine Sgt. Mykle Stahl and his mortar platoon from K Co. 3/26 where guarding their outpost on Hill 861 when they came under attack. It marked the begginning of the Battle of Khe Sanh.
The initial assault was so swift, that the enemy managed to capture the first trench line and bunkers of the camp.
Although wounded by shrapnel, Stahl launched a one man assault against the entrenched enemy. As he engaged in close quarter combat, his m16 jammed, and despite receiving bayonet wounds, he killed 2 enemy soldiers who attempted to capture him.
He then picked up an AK A-47 continued up the trenchline, killing scores communists at point blank range and recapturing the bunkers.
Although wounded for the third time, he got behind a .50 cal and brought devastating fire on the enemy ranks.
