By 1945, S/Sgt George Peterson had been through every major European Campaign of WW2. Stemming from Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany; earning several Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars and more along the way. As in an infantry platoon leader, his men looked up to him for guidance, courage and support. On March 30th, that's exactly what happened. As his platoon approached the town of Eisern, they came under heavy fire from German positions. Peterson single handedly rushed towards the incoming fire until he was hit in both legs by mortars. Despite his wounds, he crawled towards 2 MG nests, killing all crews with grenade fire. He then moved towards a third position, where he was shot in the arm. Bleeding profusely, he destroyed that position as well. A medic rushed out to him and began treating his wounds. At the same time, Peterson noticed one of his men wounded and pinned down by mortar fire in an open field. Peterson wrestled the medic out of his way and began to crawl towards the stricken comrade until he was killed by rifle fire. He was only a few yards away. As a true measure of devotion to the cause and to his brothers, Peterson would posthumously receive the Medal of Honor. Per request of his family, he was buried in Holland. #ww2 #hardcore #stayzero #zerofoxtrot
