THE ATTACK OF THE DEAD MEN
On Feb 13, 1915 the Imperial German Army was tasked with capturing fortress Osowiec in Eastern Poland as part of their offensive in the East.
Over 360 artillery pieces fired every 4 minutes for over a week with the hope of annihilating the Russian forces protecting it.
To no avail, the Germans sent in waves of infantry only to be pushed back each time. After 6 months, the fortress remained in Russian hands.
On Aug 6, the Germans launched a massive gas attack comprised of chlorine and bromine. The chemicals caused the grass to turn black and leaves to turn yellow.
Following the gas attack, and expecting little resistance, 14 infantry battalions launched a frontal assault on the position. As they approached the fortress, they were stunned to see the surviving Russians coming out of the rubble, charging them with bayonets while they were coughing up blood and bits of their own lungs, as the hydrochloric acid formed by the mix of the chlorine gas and the moisture in their lungs had begun to dissolve their flesh.
At the site of this, the panicked Germans retreated, running so fast, they ran into their own traps. The battle would letter be known as The Attack of the Dead Men.
The Russians did not hold the area for much longer and destroyed the fortress a few days later after retreating.
