In June 1986, during Namibia's war for independence from South Africa, two SWAPO guerrillas were on a mission just north of the border inside Angola when they realized they were being followed.
They immediately split up. One man went north and the other went South.
The southern trail was picked up by South African Special Forces trackers who began chasing after him in Casspir armored personnel carriers.
Despite being on foot, the guerrilla fighter managed to increase the distance between himself and the vehicles tracking him. Helicopters were called in as well, but he still managed to stay undetected using well evasive techniques and maneuvers.
The South Africans followed his tracks for 5 days, and 230 miles later, found no evidence that he ever stopped to sleep.
What they did find, however, was a bunch of used syringes along the trail..good old-fashioned Benzedrine and similar amphetamines. The drugs were so effective that the trackers actually found spots where he had collapsed from exhaustion, then gotten back up and started running again.
Finally, they tracked his path to a road and the trail went dead. Can only imagine that they gave up out of sheer respect. #stayzero #zerofoxtrot #sa #tia #bushlife
