On 18 July 1918, near Soissons, France. PFC Dan Edwards crawled into an enemy trench for the purpose of capturing or killing enemy soldiers known to be concealed therein. He was hit by enemy shell fire and his right arm was wedged on the parapet of the trench. With his .45 pistol, he killed 4 Germans and took 4 prisoners.
He made his prisoners stand back where he could see them, and with his bolo knife, he chopped off his arm at the elbow, and used his belt as a tourniquet.
One of the prisoners offered to help. PFC Edwards covered him while he seared the stump with the bolo, which was warmed over a can of heat. While conducting the POWs to the rear, one of the enemy was killed by a high explosive enemy shell which also completely shattered one of PFC Edwards’ legs. He had his prisoners carry him back to a US hospital.
The bravery of PFC Edwards was awarded the Medal of Honor.
