On April 10th, 1918, during the fight to capture the town of Tulkarm on the West Bank, Rifleman Karanbahadur Rana from the 3rd Gurkha Rifles managed to creep through the lines under fire with his Lewis Gun in order to get close to the enemy lines. As the most forward person of the attack, he began to mow down waves of enemy soldiers and silenced an MG nest despite being attacked with grenades and close rifle fire.
For the entire day, he kept the enemy at bay and gave his men enough covering fire to withdraw their wounded from the field. One of those happened to be Capt. Frederick Barter, a VC recipient.
Only until the enemy was within yards of his position, did Rana fall back.
