On the night of 5 April 1943, Subadar Lal Bahadur Thapa volunteered to lead two sections of 'D' Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Gurka Rifles, in an attack on a fortified position in Resse-es-Zouai near Wadi Akarit in Tunisia.
This position was vital to the company's advance on the oncoming attack and could only be achieved by advancing up a narrow gully that was covered by a series of machine gun positions.
Quietly creeping towards the objective, the outer posts were all killed by Thapa and his men with kukris and bayonets. The enemy then opened fire straight down the narrow enclosed pathway and pinned down the men. Under murderous MG, mortar and antitank fire and with little room to maneuver, he led his men on and fought his way up the narrow gully.
With grenades exploding at close range, he managed to reach one of the MG nests posts and killed 4 men with his kukri and revolver. With more fucks to spare, he then moved toward another nest, killing 2 more with his kukri and continued to fight on until the whole feature was cleared.
When the attack was over, only he and 2 other men were left standing.
For his actions, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, and its said that the Battle of Wadi Akarit was won singlehandedly hours before the formal attack began. #hardfucks #gurkha #ww2 #stayzero #zerofoxtrot
