Yesterday, another giant has passed. Lt. Col Richard E. Cole was one of the airmen who took part in the Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942, serving as the co-pilot to Jimmy Doolittle in the lead plane. The raid itself is one for the books since it consisted of B25 bombers, taking off from carriers in enemy held territory, to bomb targets in mainland Japan in retaliation for Pearl Harbor, and with the full knowledge that death was pretty certain. The landing plan was to reach China, bail out and evade capture. The mission was a success, and it was more of a symbolic victory rather than a strategic one. At 103 years old, Lt. Col Cole was the last surviving member of the raiding team. We should all bare in mind that we are the generation who are going to see these men off and it wont be long till they are all gone. We have a responsibility to show these men that what they fought for was worth it. #restinpeace #ww2 #doolittle #stayzero #zerofoxtrot
