On Jan. 24, 1945, the Germans launched a massive ground attack against an American outpost located near the town of Houssen, France.
The German force consisted of 6 tanks and 600 infantrymen supported by artillery. Amongst the Americans of the 3rd ID, stood 1st Lt. Garlin Conner who did what any sane man would do: Grab a spool of wire, a field telephone and run head on towards the oncoming hoard.
Alone, he ran 400 yards ahead of the line under murderous shell fire to set up a small observation post in a shallow ditch. There, under constant fire, he began to call in deadly fire missions against the oncoming forces for 3 hours. At one point, the Germans got to within 5 yards of his position, and thats when he gave the order to blanket his own position.
By sheer miracle, he survived his own fire mission and continued to put accurate artillery fire on the enemy until the assault was broken.
Conner single handedly stopped an entire attack, wiping out all armor and the majority of the infantry with nothing but a phone and his balls.
He survived his wounds and the war.
In a span of 28 months, Conner had received 4 silver Stars, 3 Purple Hearts and the Distinguished Service Cross.
His DSC was eventually upgraded to Medal of Honor in 2018.
