In January 1945, Japanese soldiers were being pushed back in Ramree Island by invading British troops. Instead of surrendering, 1000 of the men hatched an escape plan by fleeing through a nearby swamp.
They thought they were going to make their way to safety, but instead, the men began a 10 mile trek through the swamp which was infested with salt water crocodiles, some weighing as much as 2,000 lb.
The blood of the injured soldiers lured the crocodiles in. With the ebb of the tide, the crocodiles moved in on the dead, wounded, and uninjured men who had become mired in the mud.
The British soldiers reported hearing panicked screams and gunfire emanating from within the darkness of the swamp. They didn’t know what exactly caused the shouts of terror they heard, but only that the Japanese troops were being ravaged by some evil menace.
One by one, the men were dragged into the water by the hungry animals, never to be seen again.
By the end, only 520 of the 1,000 men who’d entered the swamp made it out alive. #hungergames #sushi #ww2 #stayzero #zerofoxtrot
