On July 18, 1948, during the Indo-Pakistani War, Company Havildar Major Piru Singh Shekhawat and the men of the 6th BN Rajputana Rifles were tasked with a taking out enemy positions near a narrow ravine. Within 30 minutes of the attack, the men had sustained over 50 casualties.
Under deadly fire from the heights above, Singh began rushing towards an enemy MG bunker. Despite being wounded several times by grenade shrapnel in the process, he took out the crew with his Sten and bayonet. Once secured, he rushed another bunker, this time, he took the full brunt of another grenade to the face. Covered in blood, shrapnel and barely able to see, he took out 2 trenches with grenades and bayonet, killing scores of the enemy.
Before he was able to move out of the last trench, he was hit by a bullet to the head. As he succumbed to his wounds, Singh hurled a final grenade into a nearby Pakistani trench, killing 2 soldiers.
For his actions and sacrifice, he was awarded the Param Vi Chakra, the highest medal for valor where only 21 recipients ever received it, and 7 lived to wear it. #hardcore #getsome #stayzero #zerofoxtrot
