Wanted to address a few opinions that some have expressed about our recent "war" posts. First and foremost, war is hell. It ain't pretty, it ain't sweet, it's just raw and real. It encompasses many sides such as honor, dignity, compassion, courage...also brutality, gore, savagery, violence, death. For anyone who has been introduced to it, he doesn't pick which sides he wants to be exposed to. We post what we post not to glorify, but to understand....understanding; something that we've been extremely good at failing in the last 60 years. The same person who pulled gold teeth out of a dead soldier is the same one who gave his last ration to a starving civilian the next day. As one WWII Marine said: "we began to get down on their level". Its the state of mind, the conditions and sheer survival that makes a man do the unthinkable..to society's standards. War is black, white and grey, with definitive undefined lines.
The man on the ground doesn't decide the outcome, he can only control his actions under the given circumstances. This isn't the "cover your eyes Johnny until the bad part of the movie is done" page, nor one to advocate violence..but we do understand it. War is an essential part of our existence, it shapes and destroys eras, countries, empires..there will never be a holding-hands across-the-world-feast..sorry. It's the man one the ground who holds the burden in his soul, not the one who has been spared by it. There is no cherry on this pie, just reality. Each generation has done their share of good and bad, and for you who haven't been in it, you can only judge while wearing a different optic of life under the blanket of freedom that has been provided through such "despicable" acts.
