"The first thing you notice about the beach is that there are dead men all over it. I was able to make it to the iron barriers that the Germans had put up, and all of the men where piled up on top of each other, not side by side, but on top of each other. Seeing so many men die, so much death..it took me a few minutes for my training to kick in. . When you hear the cry for a medic, there is no choice, you don't think about anything except you have to go, regardless of what's happening. You tend to him, take care of him if possible, if he was dead, you went on to the next guy; At the time, nothing mattered but your job. . I came across a man who had a very serious stomach wound, he was a medic that I knew..a good friend of mine. I began treating him but I couldn't do much for him, so I gave a shot of morphine. We said goodbye to each other since we both knew he wasn't going to make it and moved on to the next guy. . These are men who live in your memory. The personalities become frozen, they never developed, they are stopped in time and place. These were living human beings. Some are nutty, some are irritating, all of them were real. All of their futures gone." Medical Sgt. Frank South, HQ Company, 2nd Ranger BN, Point Du Hoc. Normandy, France June 6th, 1944. #reality #ww2 #medic #ranger #rtlw #stayzero #zerofoxtrot
