One way to counter the threat of the V1 Buzzbombs during WWII was known as a Diver Patrol. It was a very dangerous tactic which consisted of an RAF plane coming to the same speed and elevation of the flying bomb, while trying to slide it's wing underneath the stabilizer and perform a tipping maneuver in order to destabilize the gyro system to disrupt it's pattern and trajectory resulting in an uncontrolled dive.
The average speed of V-1s was 340 mph and their average altitude was 3,300 - 3,900 ft. At least 16 V-1s were destroyed this way (the first by a P-51 piloted by Major R. E. Turner of 356th Fighter Squadron) #stayzero #zerofoxtrot #raf #ww2 #buzzbomb
