During fierce fighting on July 18, 1918, at the Battle of Soissons, an artillery shell pinned then PFC Daniel R Edwards's right arm between rocks of a trench wall as he was crawling alone in order to capture or kill enemy soldiers which where hiding within. To free himself, he severed his arm at the elbow, he then killed four Germans with his 1911 pistol and took four more as prisoners. While escorting the prisoners back to friendly lines, Edwards forces one of the prisoners to carry back his severed arm. Suddenly, another explosion shattered his legs and killed one prisoner. He ordered the surviving prisoners to carry him the rest of the way.

For his intrepid actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. To also note that the action described happened after he escaped a hospital in order to rejoin his men after he was wounded a few weeks prior to this, earning him a Distinguished service cross for holding back multiple German counter attacks. Edwards is considered one of the two most-decorated U.S. infantrymen by American awards in WW1. #hardfuckapproved
