On Aug 27, 1944 TSgt. Stephen Gregg and the men of the 143rd Infantry were advancing towards the French town of Montelimar when they encountered heavy German resistance. The initial contact killed and wounded several GIs, to include the rescuing medics and officers in his platoon.
With no fucks to spare, he grabbed a 30 cal. MG and began to move in the open fields towards the entrenched Germans, firing from his hip. His devastating fire allowed a medic to rescue 7 wounded GIs.
When Gregg ran out of ammo, he was immediately surrounded by 4 Germans who told him to surrender. At that moment, an incoming artillery round caused everyone to hit the dirt. One of the Germans dropped his Mp40 in the confusion, so Gregg picked it up, shot 2 Germans at point blank and ran back towards the American lines.
The next day, he helped push back a heavy German counter attack.
Six months later, at BN HQ, Gregg was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on that day. After the brief ceremony, he placed the Medal in his back pocket, and jumped on the next truck heading towards the Siegfried Line.
