During the Gallipoli Campaign, the Anzac and Turkish positions often overlooked each other. Each side sent out marksmen to hunt and stalk and snipe, to wait, shoot and kill.
Creeping with stealth through the green and brown shrubbery was Trooper William Edward "Billy" Sing. Armed with his .303 Lee Enfield, he rained terror on the Turks behind their own lines with precision and determination, killing between 150 to 300 of the enemy in the span of a few months and earning the nickname "Assassin". His kills ranged between 300 to 1000 yards out.
Every time Billy felt sorry for the poor Turks, he remembered how their snipers picked off the Australian officers in the early days of the landing, and he hardened his heart. But he never fired at a stretcher-bearer or any of the soldiers who were trying to rescue wounded Turks. But if he spotted a severely injured Turk with no rescue in sight, he would simply shoot him to end his agony.
He earned several medals for valor, served on the western front and was wounded himself numerous times by bullets and gas.
