Neptunus Rex (Crossing the Line) is an initiation rite to commemorate a sailor's first crossing of the Equator. In this two-day event, the crew members who already crossed (Trusty Shellbacks) are organized into a "Court of Neptune" to induct the Slimy Pollywogs (nasty boots). Physical hardship, in keeping with the spirit of the initiation, is tolerated, and each Pollywog is expected to endure a standard initiation rite in order to become a Shellback.
