George T. Sakato, a California native and a second generation Japanese, joined the US Army in March 1944, and by October of the same year, Pvt. Sakato was slaying Jerry with his men from the 442nd RCT (the highest decorated unit in US history) in the ETO.
On October 29, his platoon became pinned down by heavy enemy fire on hill 617, in the vicinity of Biffontaine, France. Disregarding the enemy fire, Private Sakato made a one-man rush against the enemy positions. When he ran out of ammunition, he killed 12 and wounded 2 with a P-38 pistol and an enemy rifle, personally capturing 4 and assisting his platoon in taking 34 more prisoners...all this without sustaining a single wound.
Sakato originally received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions. In June, 2000, along with 21 other Asian-American veterans of World War II including Sen. Daniel Inouye from Hawaii, George Sakato finally received the Medal of Honor from President Bill Clinton. “How I got the medal, I don’t know”, Sakato said. “I saw only 90 days of actual combat.
