Bill Speakman was awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military honor, for his bravery in slaying commies during the Korean War.
Rounding up six of his comrades in November 1951, he gathered a pile of grenades and led a series of charges against North Korean and Chinese soldiers who were overrunning their positions.
Despite suffering injuries to his leg and shoulder, he battled on to repel the enemy. Having run out of grenades he resorted to throwing beer bottles in a heroic bid to protect his comrades and allow them to withdraw safely. When he received the Victoria Cross, he became the first recipient to have the medal presented by the Queen. He continued to serve, including being part of the SAS and several other units until his retirement in 1967. Only 10 other recipients are still alive whom were awarded the VC by the Queen.
He passed away at the age of 90 on June 20th, 2018. Fair winds warrior. #stayzero #zerofoxtrot #badass #respect #uk
