Yogendra Singh Yadav was a soldier in the Indian Army, a grenadier of the Commando Ghatak Platoon. He fought in the Kargil War in 1999 and became a legend after capturing an entire mountain by himself.
On the night of July 4, he’s commando unit was tasked out to capture 3 enemy bunkers situated on top of “Tiger Hill”; a 16,500ft mountain covered in snow and 90 degree vertical cliff faces of solid ice. The plan was to send one person to the top where he would then fasten ropes so that the rest of the team could climb. Yadav volunteered and began his climb. Half way to the top, the enemy began to open fire with RPGs and heavy machineguns. Despite being shot 3 times in the groin and shoulder, he managed to climb to the top and take out the first bunker by running towards point blank enemy fire and killing everyone inside with a grenade. He then ran towards the second bunker where he killed everyone inside with his bare hands. The third bunker was easily captured by the rest of his unit as they made their way to the top. After all being said and done, Yadav later realized that he had 15 bullets lodged in his body.
For his actions, at the age of 19, Yadav was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the nation’s highest award for bravery.
The Param Vir Chakra is only given for rarest of the rare gallantry which is beyond the call of duty and which in normal life is considered impossible to do. It has only been awarded 21 times in its history, and two thirds of the people who earned it died in the process.
