During World War I, a military unit was created by King Edward VII known as the 5th Battalion Norfolk Regiment, or more commonly referred to as “The Norfolks. On Aug 12, 1915, during the Gallipoli Campaign, the 5th Norfolk got orders to launch an attack against the Turks. With poor supplies, inaccurate maps, and lack of water, the men attacked and during the heat of the Battle, the Norfolks were separated from their main unit. They were met with a rain of machine-gun fire and yet, they managed to push the Turks back toward a forest with a storm of artillery fire. They continued into the burning forest–and that was the last anyone would see of them. The battalion never made it back from the forest; not one returned to tell what happened. Nor were their bodies found on the field. They simply disappeared. The red cross, ambassadors and even the Queen set out to investigate. After the war was over, no trace of the men was ever found in any of the POW camps. 50 years later, 3 veterans of the battle claimed they saw a formation of loaf-shaped clouds that hovered over the area where the Norfolks were fighting. One of these clouds descended over the men and after an hour or so, it rose “very unobtrusively” and joined the other clouds and sailed off. When the men on the ground could see the forest clearly, there was no sign of the soldiers. A report from 1919 claimed that a mass grave was found with the missing bodies spread across an area of approximately one square mile, at least 800 yards away from the Turkish front line. They were all executed but none were identified. Whether the men were all killed in battle, in a camp, or met some other bizarre fate, the disappearance of the battalion is still considered a mystery. #ww1 #mystery #stayzero #war #ghostbattalion
