A few months before I graduated HS, a buddy of mine showed me an article where Blackwater contractors were murdered in the city of Fallujah. The vivid images of their burnt bodies being hung on the city's bridge was something surreal. I never thought about that moment afterwards, not until I was crossing the same bridge a year later. The first thought that popped in my head was "Holy shit, I was reading about this place a year ago...now I'm actually here" and from then on reality sat in pretty fucking quick.
