As I was driving on a lone Texas back road, I passed by a house that was proudly displaying the Marine Corps flag. I could have just drove by, but I decided to pull over, walk over to the door and thank the Marine who lived in that house. It was a complete spontaneous gesture and I'm glad I did it. Sgt. Jim White served as an 0311 with 1st BN 5th Marines, enlisting before completing high school. He landed in Vietnam in 1968, and on July 31st, 1969 at 11:30 at night in Da Nang, his 8 man patrol was caught in an ambush. He was shot 8 times in the legs by automatic fire. Despite him and another Marine being wounded, the squad killed over 30 enemy combatants before they were evacuated. He came back States side and was medically discharged. We were complete strangers, but bonded instantly because Marines will always be Marines, no matter the generations. It was a true humbling experience and one that I won't forget.
