This week’s bad ass is Sergeant Stubby; that’s right, a fucking dog. Don’t be fooled because despite his stature, his accomplishments in combat are far bigger. - Recognized as the most decorated war dog of World War I and the only dog to be nominated for rank and then promoted to Sergeant through combat. - He was the official mascot of the 102nd Infantry/ 26th Yankee Division - Saw 18 months of continuous combat and participated in 4 offensives, and 17 battles on the Western Front. - Received 2 Wound stripes (predecessors of Purple Hearts) while chasing down retreating Germans throwing hand grenades (catching a grenade on the chest and leg). - He was able to find wounded soldiers on No Man’s Land - Helped liberate a French village - Due to being previously gassed, Stubby quickly learned to warn his unit of poison gas attacks; therefore saving his entire regiment on many occasions - He singlehandedly captured a German spy in the Argonne forest, holding him there till American soldiers found him. - Since he could hear the whine of incoming artillery shells before humans could, he became very adept at letting his unit know when to duck for cover. - On his downtime, he would provide moral relief and comfort to his fellow soldiers. - When he came back to the States, he led parades across the country and met Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren G. Harding. - In 1926, Stubby died peacefully in his sleep. His body was preserved and presented to the Smithsonian in 1956 which is still there to this day. “Sergeant Stubby Hero Dog of WW1, A Brave Stray”
