Not after shrapnel tore into the left side of the young Marine’s face during his time fighting Japanese soldiers in the bloody battle of Okinawa during World War II.
Not when the scorching hot metal broke his jaw, costing him his left eye, some teeth, his sense of smell and the hearing in his left ear.
Not during the times when people would stare at his wounds and scars in church or when his supervisor at General Motors suggested he cover up with an eye patch.
Instead, Markovich was grateful he survived. “I just felt lucky, because there were so many guys that were so much worse off, and I felt lucky. I just never dwelled on my appearance — never. I lived a wonderful life.
