On June 29, 1968, then PFC Frank A. Herda and the men of Co. A, 1/506th 101st Airborne (Airmobile) were part of a battalion-size defensive perimeter in Dak To, Quang Trang Prov, Vietnam. On that night, a large enemy force initiated a massive attack. While other enemy elements provided diversionary fire and indirect weapons fire to the west, a sapper force of approximately 30 men armed with hand grenades and small charges attacked Company A’s perimeter from the east.
As the sappers were making a last, violent assault, five of them charged the position defended by Herda and two comrades, one of whom was wounded and lay helpless in the bottom of the foxhole. PFC Herda fired at the aggressors until they were within ten feet of his position and one of their grenades landed in the foxhole. He fired one last round from his grenade launcher, hitting one of the enemy soldiers in the head, and then, with no concern for his safety, he immediately jumped on top of the grenade and absorbed the full blast. The explosion wounded him grievously, but he survived and his selfless act saved the lives of his two comrades.
PFC Herda was subsequently promoted to Specialist Four and received the Medal of Honor, and at the age of 68, he's still staying zero. #zerofucks #nofucks #stayzero #zerofoxtrot #hero #badass #military
