The man you're looking at is Charles G. Abrell. Enlisting in the US Marines at the age of 17 in 1948, he would soon find himself deploying with 2nd BN, 1st Marines and heading off to Korea.
By June 10, 1951, after surviving Inchon, Seoul, Wonsan, the Chosin Reservoir, and Hanghum, Cpl. Abrell was a fire team leader for Company E and was leading his men to attack a well-concealed and heavily fortified enemy hill position near Hangnyong.
During the advance, his platoon came under heavy automatic fire from one of the enemy bunkers. Despite being wounded by a hand grenade, he proceeded to carry out a bold, single-handed attack against the bunker, exhorting his comrades to follow him. As he stormed toward the emplacement, Cpl. Abrell sustained two additional wounds. Understanding the overwhelming importance of the objective and the lives of his men, he pulled the pin from a grenade, clutched it in his hands and rushed towards the bunker, with the grenade still in his grasp and detonated himself, killing the entire enemy guncrew, giving his men a chance to complete the mission.
