This old breed hard fuck is Henry William Murray. Born in Tasmania in 1880, he would eventually be one of the most decorated soldiers of the Empire during WW1; rising from the rank of private to Lt.Col in only 3 and half years.
By April, 1915, Murray first saw action in the Gallipoli Campaign, serving as a loader for his machinegun crew with the 16th BN. Holding back several counter attacks and stacking up Turks like a boss despite being wounded several times, Murray was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
By June, 1916, and already a Captain, his men were deployed to France, fighting in some of the fiercest battles of the war to include Somme and Passchendaele. On 29 August, Murray captured Mouquet Farm under heavy fire. His men repelled four German counterattacks before he ordered them to withdraw. He remained in command until the next morning, when he fainted from loss of blood from two wounds he had sustained during the action. That earned him his first DSO.
On Feb. 4, 1917, Murray and his men captured a key enemy position, held back numerous counter attacks, survived hours of shelling from enemy artillery and with no fucks to give, Murray led bombing parties, led bayonet charges and carried his wounded men to safety. By the next morning, his 140-men company was reduced to only 48 survivors.
For his actions, Murray was awarded the Victoria Cross.
On April of that year, Murray was awarded another DSO for actions near the Hindenburg Line.
By 1918, Murray was promoted to Lt. Col. and continued to serve well into WW2 until his retirement in 1944.
