This Arizona native is 2nd Lt. Frank Luke. Upon joining the US Air Service in 1917, Luke would quickly become one of the top aces of the Great War.
His missions were pretty straight forward, shoot down German fighters and destroy their balloons (hot air balloons were used as an observation method long before satellites and drones). Luke had a particular skill in taking them down, to which he earned the nickname "Arizona Balloon Buster". In one battle, he shot down 2 balloons and 3 fighter planes in the span of 10 minutes.
Another time, his gun jammed, so he climbed out, fixed it in mid-flight, turned BACK AROUND, hunted his target down and killed him.
On Sept 29, 1918, Luke was flying deep behind German lines when 8 fighters and ground fire hit his plane and was severely wounded. Before crash landing his plane in a field, Luke managed to destroy 3 balloons and strafe 6 Germans on the ground.
As he climbed out of the wreckage, and bleeding profusely, the Germans surrounded the site and told him to surrender.
Luke simply responded by killing 7 Germans with his Colt .45 until he collapsed from a chest wound.
