On November 12, 1944. Lt. Friedrich Lengfeld was leading his unit during the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, the longest battle fought on German soil during World War II as Allied Forces pushed from occupied territory into Germany itself.
The young Lieutenant heard the cries of a wounded American soldier lying in a German minefield. The man’s regiment had retreated so he was left alone. At first, Lengfeld simply ordered his men not to shoot at any Allied rescuers, but as none came and the man continued to suffer he decided to launch his own rescue attempt.
Kitting his men out with Red Cross gear, Lengfeld set out to try to save the man. Sadly, he paid the ultimate price for his bravery, stepping on a mine that killed him.
Lt.Friedrich Lengfeld died trying to save an enemy soldier and it is believed that his memorial is the only one in a German military cemetery raised by American soldiers.
It is not known what happened to the wounded GI, but Lengfeld’s heroism was not unrecorded.
