I've seen this happen a good bunch of times while I was in. Its not the mere fact of the medal or boasting rights, but to give credit where credit us due, and lord knows, the Lance coolies and privates who kick doors down don't get any, but the officer who takes a piss outside of the wire writes himself up for a Bronze star with a V. A true hard charger doesn't give a fuck about chest salad, but I've seen plenty of guys who have done some incredible acts of courage, never recognized, only to be swept away by the high chain of command.
