2cents: How many times have we heard the term "Don't be that guy". Please, don't be that guy who uses his veteran status as a crutch on society. I see this everyday. Veterans who pull out their VA card every where they go, wear those obnoxious motard shirts with basically their DD-214 stamped on the back or drive around with a car full of stickers..even the ones that say "MEPS: I've been there and I survived it". Don't be that guy who always looks for a fucking handout and make people feel sorry you by telling them about all of your pain and suffering and all the people you killed blah blah...it's mostly bullshit anyways. Legit guys don't advertise, they don't ask for free shit and sure as hell don't make people feel petty about them.
Society already has a misconception of veterans as crazed baby killers..don't add to the fact and make us look like some miserable soft handed species either. Don't be that guy who walks into a bar demanding a beer and yapping about how you're harder than most folks in there and how they owe you their freedom...only to find out that you didn't even go overseas and went AWOL after 2 months.
Now, I'm not saying that you as veteran shouldn't take advantage of the opportunities and the deals reserved only for vets (USAA, VA Loan, GI Bill, Veteran Business Loans etc...) those are programs that as a veteran, you are entitled to and need to benefit from it.
If someone does buy you a beer, it's a sign of appreciation for what you've sacrificed for this country. If someone shakes your hand and tells you "Thanks"..that right there is worth everything. There are plenty of people who support us vets and hold us to a higher level of respect, but don't take advantage of the same people you have fought to protect. Be humble, be honest, be proud and be grateful for what you get. Also, dont forget to like our backup page @zulufuck
